Best Sod and Grass Seed types for San Jose, California

Knowing the best sod or grass seed to use requires consideration of a few factors only a sod farm would know. Today, we will share our sod secrets and look at the best sod and grass seed for San Jose! We will review important information about this major city along with Sod and Seed, Inc.'s best recommendations, grounded in over 20 years of hands-on experience and research-based practices with sod and grass seed.

San Jose Sod

With over 1 million residents and growing, San Jose is the largest city in Santa Clara County and the third largest city in the state of California. San Jose is popular for being the heart of the Silicon Valley during the "tech-boom", which also houses companies such as Apple, Facebook, Google and other institutions such as The Tech Interactive Museum, Stanford University, NASA's Ames Research Center and San Jose State University.

Look closely and one thing all of these businesses and institutions have in common is sod, all taking pride in showcasing their best sod lawns. Everywhere we look, we see sod. From grass in parks to immaculate residential lawns and to the sod lawns housed by some of the world's largest businesses.

As the heart of the Silicon Valley, San Jose has a diverse landscape, sitting surrounded by its hilly geography. North San Jose is closer to the Bay Area, providing this part of the city with more moderate and cooler temperatures controlled by the water. South San Jose, however, is more inland with warmer temperatures in the summer and cooler temperatures in the winter. Annually, the temperatures in San Jose range from a rarely low of 35 degrees to a summer high of 105 degrees. With this large change in hot and cold temperatures throughout the year, San Jose lawns need sod that can handle the diverse climactic challenges posed for San Jose gardening.

Top 7 Sod and Grass Seed Types for San Jose

1. Kurapia Ground Cover

Kurapia ground cover has become number one in San Jose! In fact, the city is purchasing Kurapia ground cover to replace sod areas. You can see two public areas below with Kurapia ground cover sod. Lets talk a little bit more about Kurapia ground cover.
Kurapia ground cover is a new and innovative ground cover that has quickly taken over the greater San Jose area and loves the San Jose full sun and heat! Kurapia ground cover is increasingly sought after for three main reasons. First, Kurapia ground cover is highly drought tolerant, saving up to 60% on watering. Second, Kurapia ground cover never has to be mowed. Although this may sound too good to be true, Sod and Seed, Inc. conducted in-house testing of Kurapia ground cover in our own homes in which no one ever mowed their Kurapia ground cover lawns. To this day, we still have not! While some lawn owners mow and trim Kurapia ground cover for personal aesthetics preferences, Kurapia sod ground cover does not actually grow high enough to require mowing. Third, Kurapia ground cover is self-healing and repairs from damage quickly and well. A key feature that helps Kurapia ground cover self-heal is a deep rooting system. Kurapia ground cover's deep rooting system also provides drought tolerance, heat tolerance, and supports lateral growth which gives Kurapia ground cover growth low to the ground and in turn never needs mowing. The cherry on top is that Kurapia sod blooms miniature white flowers twice per year between May and October!

One thing we have noticed at Sod and Seed, Inc. is that San Jose loves Latitude 36 Bermudagrass sod! The first thing to note about Bermuda grasses in general is that they go dormant in the winter (end of fall to beginning of spring), but overseeding Bermudagrass with Perennial Rye Grass seed is a common solution for a green lawn year-round. Our Latitude 36 Bermudagrass sod (one of our top Bermudas among other great choices such as our Celebration Bermuda Grass, Delta Tifway 2 Bermuda and Tifway 419 Bermuda), offers the highest possible heat tolerance with a 10/10 rating and above average drought tolerance. Our Latitude 36 Bermuda sod also offers great wear and tear recovery, making Latitude 36 sod ideal for sports areas in full sun.

4. Shade Blend Sod

Shade blend sod is becoming more and more popular in San Jose as time goes on. Our Shade Blend sod is very similar to our Tall 9010 Fescue sod but instead of using bluegrass, our Shade Blend has a fine fescue mix. Fine fescue sod has a 10 out of 10 on shade tolerance ratings, helping make the Shade Blend sod more shade tolerant than most grasses. Our Shade Blend sod has been a long-standing San Jose favorite for many reasons. Most of our customers who choose our Special Shade Blend Sod choose the sod because the grass adapts to the hotter San Jose climate while providing shade tolerance as well. As discussed earlier, inland areas of San Jose can have temperatures as high as 105 degrees, in which a sun-loving but shade-tolerant grass is ideal. Don't let our Special Shade Blend fool you, this sod also loves full sun and provides similar benefits as our Delta Tall 9010 such as drought tolerance, heat tolerance, and excellent self-repair from wear and tear damage.

  • Hello Rick B.! Thank you for purchasing Enduro Dwarf Tall Fescue; we are happy when our customers are pleased with the product. Our Enduro Dwarf Tall Fescue should be mowed regularly with a rotary mower. Set the mowing height to cut at 2. Please note, you should never mow more than one-third of the top growth at any time.
