California's Top 5 Drought-Tolerant Lawns

Welcome to Sod and Seed, Inc., home of California's largest sod selection, always fresh from the farm, never held in stock! Today we'll be going over California's top 5 drought-tolerant lawn options. Although it seems California is officially no longer in a drought, opting for drought-tolerant lawn options is still a wise choice. Water is a dwindling natural resource so water conservation should continue to be a priority. In addition to supporting water conservation, drought-tolerant lawns also provide other benefits like low-maintenance and cost-efficiency. We'll share some information for our best-selling lawn options including Kurapia ground cover, Frog Fruit ground cover, Native Bentgrass, RTF sod and TIFTUF hybrid Bermuda grass.

Kurapia Ground Cover

Kurapia ground cover is a natural hybrid plant that has increased in popularity for its drought-tolerance, among other desirable traits. In addition to drought-tolerance saving up to 50% on watering or more, Kurapia ground cover never needs to be mowed because it grows laterally and not upwards. Kurapia ground cover also self-heals when damaged and seasonally blooms miniature white flowers between May and October.

Frog Fruit Ground Cover

Frog fruit ground cover is a native plant that is one of the parents to Kurapia ground cover. For this reason, the native frog fruit offers many of the same benefits as Kurapia ground cover, such as drought-tolerance, saving up to 50% or more on watering and never needing to be mowed. Frog fruit ground cover also blooms miniature white flowers between May and October. One difference between the native frog fruit and Kurapia is that the native frog fruit adapts to its environment, so frog fruit ground cover transitions into a deep, dark green color during winter.

Native Grasses

Native grasses are an excellent way to keep a traditional sod lawn look and cut watering in half. Native grasses save 50% on watering and have natural adaptations to the environment. Our Native Bentgrass sod is our top selling native grass, perhaps because it is versatile in aesthetic and has more shade tolerance than most other grasses. Our native bentgrass can be grown out for a meadow like look or be kept at a lower mowing height.

RTF Sod

RTF sod, or rhizomatous tall fescue sod, offers 30% water savings without sacrificing the look and feel of a traditional sod lawn. In addition to improved water savings, our RTF sod is the only fescue that will self heal when damaged. RTF sod is also a great choice for shady or sun and shade areas as it can receive as little as 4 hours of sun per day while most other traditional grasses require 6-7 hours of sun per day.

Bermuda Grass

Hybrid Bermudagrass options are an excellent way to decrease water usage and our TIFTUF sod is the newest and best hybrid bermuda grass on the market right now. Our TIFTUF hybrid bermuda grass sod has improved shade tolerance and a shorter dormancy period. During the winter, a hybrid bermuda grass lawn can offer 100% water savings when not overseeded with rye grass seed.
