There are a few different ways to measure your lawn for grass:

Measure length times width

Measure the length and width of your lawn in feet and multiply these numbers to get the total square footage. For example, if your lawn is 50 feet long and 30 feet wide, the total square footage is 1500.

Use an online tool

Use a mapping tool or app to measure your lawn. There are several online tools and smartphone apps that allow you to measure the area of your lawn by drawing a perimeter around it on a map.

Use a wheel or measuring tape

Use a wheel or measuring tape to physically measure the distance around the perimeter of your lawn and then multiply this number by 0.0069 to get the total square footage.

Use a laser rangefinder

Use a laser rangefinder or other surveying tool to measure the distance between various points on your lawn and then use these measurements to calculate the total square footage using a formula such as the one for the area of a rectangle or triangle.

Once you have the total square footage of your lawn, you can use this number to determine how much grass seed or sod you will need to cover the area. Most grass seed products come with coverage guidelines that tell you how much seed is needed to cover a certain number of square feet.
