How to Choose the Best Sod and Grass Seed for Your Home & Garden in Sacramento

Here is our list of most popular sod and grass seed types for Sacramento and the larger Sacramento County area. These sod types were the most popular in sales for 2021, making the top 6 best sod types list for 2022. Each sod will have a brief introduction and have a link that should direct you to the sod pricing, sod ratings, and sod reviews.

At Sod And Seed, Inc. we often hear our Sacramento customers ask, "What IS the best sod for Sacramento?" Well, while Sod and Seed, Inc. can provide over 30 sod options, we had to narrow our grass selection down to the top five sod types specifically for Sacramento. Also, please note that all sod and grass seed on this list have been tested by Sod and Seed, Inc. in Sacramento and approved for Sacramento soil variants.

Here are the top 6 Best Sod Types for Sacramento California.

1. Special Shade Blend Sod

Our Special Shade Blend sod is one of the most popular options. Like most other plants, sod requires sunlight to live. Insufficient sunlight is the largest obstruction and issue we have for sod lawns in newer Sacramento homes. But, Shade Blend sod is tough and cultivated to adapt to shade. Our Shade Blend sod is 90 percent tall fescue and 10 percent fine fescue. During our annual stress testing, the Shade Blend sod has made it to the top 5 survivors with stressors such as minimal watering (we water way less than recommended!). Due to trees and homes being constructed higher and closer to each other, Shade Blend sod is a perfect solution to shady lawns and although the name can be misleading, the Shade Blend can also handle direct sun all day. Our Shade Blend sod will give your area a sod lawn that is durable, drought tolerant and green all year. Our Shade Blend sod can also happily spend a full day in sun, making this the ideal sod for a lawn with both full sun and shady areas. Shade Blend sod can handle foot traffic very well as well as pets, all while being able to withstand up to 40% filtered shade throughout the day.

2. Delta Tall 9010 Sod

Delta Tall 9010 sod is our most drought tolerant sod and durable sod in our fescue sod turf types. Our Delta Tall 9010 is 90 percent Tall Fescue and 10 percent Kentucky Bluegrass, making the Tall 9010 a sun-loving sod that is drought tolerant and perfect for active families. Tall Fescue sod loves the heat and can take full sun all day as well as heavy foot traffic because it has a deeper rooting system and thicker stocks. The deep rooting system of our Tall 9010 Fescue mix also make for a lawn perfect for recreational use, for dogs and children. Anyone who loves their pets will also love our Delta Tall 9010 sod! When your lifestyle is active and needs a sod with the same energy, our Delta Tall 9010 sod will keep up and thrive. If you are looking for something a little softer and a little slower growing, be sure to view our Bolero Plus sod below. Both the Tall 9010 and Bolero Plus have similar pricing and are both 90/10 sod blends. However, the Tall one is cut out for heavy activity with fast growth, and the other for mild activity, a thinner blade and slow growth.

3. Latitude 36 Bermudagrass Sod

Latitude 36 Bermudagrass sod is a hybrid Bermuda grass developed from our former best-selling Bermuda sod, the Celebration Bermudagrass. Our Celebration Bermudagrass is still available although the Latitude 36 sod has grown popular for research-based improvements compared to other hybrid Bermudas. For example, the Latitude 36 has finer blades and its dormancy period is shorter than other Bermudas during winter. Latitude 36 sod can be mowed exceptionally low and is used in NFL stadiums everywhere in America. Latitude 36 sod is higher maintenance if cut low and needs regular mowing and fertilizing. In the winter, you can over seed your Bermuda lawn with Rye grass seed if you want your Bermuda grass to be green year-round. Here is the information for our stadium grade Bermudagrass sod, our Latitude 36 Bermudagrass.

4. Delta Bluegrass Ryegrass Sod

Delta Bluegrass with Ryegrass sod works great for areas with small children and for people who want an aesthetic, soft-textured, slow-growing lawn. This sod mixture can be created as a 50-50 mix (50% Kentucky Bluegrass and 50% Perennial Rye grass) or as an 80-20 mixture (80% Perennial Ryegrass and 20% Kentucky Bluegrass). Our Bluegrass Ryegrass sod options have the best visual appeal and are the softest grasses. Both of the mixes discussed above are cool season sod grasses and need water every other day, regardless of weather, and will likely need daily watering on days over 90 degrees.

5. Runner Up, a New Ground Cover called Kurapia!

Kurapia ground cover has become dramatically popular in the Sacramento Area as the new grass alternative! Never mow again, water once a week, edge a couple of times a year, and that's it. It's no wonder why Kurapia ground cover is extremely popular, right? This product is brand new to the sod industry and our Kurapia ground cover has sold out ever year. Kurapia ground cover sod is sterile and blooms thousands of small, white flowers twice a year, making this a great pollinator and a good friend to gardens and wild life. Deer do not eat Kurapia ground cover, which makes Kurapia ground cover sod a great option for people in hill areas where deer pose serious lawn eating problems.

6. Bolero Plus Sod

Bolero Plus sod works for people with areas that will get foot traffic but not much heavy sports action for the Sacramento area. Sod and Seed, Inc. recommends our Bolero Plus because it is also slower growing fescue with a thinner blade. A slower growing and finer fescue not only make for a more aesthetic sod lawn, but also a lower maintenance ground cover option. Our Bolero Plus Dwarf Fescue and Bluegrass has proven to be an excellent drought tolerant, lower maintenance sod lawn options for active lawns in Sacramento.
