How to Install Sod (EDITED DECEMBER 2022)

Posted by Razy Garcia-Sanchez on

Installing sod is a quick and easy way to establish a new lawn or repair an existing one. Here are some steps for how to install sod:

Prepare the Soil

Prepare the soil: Before installing the sod, prepare the soil by removing any weeds or debris, and loosen the soil to a depth of about 6 inches. Rake the soil smooth to create a level surface.

Fertilize the Soil

Fertilize the soil: Fertilize the soil with a balanced lawn fertilizer according to the manufacturer's instructions. This will help to nourish the sod and encourage healthy growth.

Install Sod or Lay Sod

Lay the sod: Begin at one end of the area and work your way across, laying the sod in a brick pattern. Make sure the edges of the sod pieces are touching, but do not overlap them. Use a sod roller or your feet to gently press down on the sod to ensure good contact with the soil.

Water Your New Sod Lawn

Water the sod: Water the sod immediately after it has been installed to help it establish roots. Water the sod daily or every other day, depending on the weather and soil conditions, until the roots have become established.

Lawn Care

Maintain and Tend to Your New Sod Lawn

Maintain the sod: Once the sod has been installed, continue to water it regularly and fertilize it according to the manufacturer's instructions. Mow the sod when it reaches a height of about 3 inches, and remove any weeds that appear.

By following these steps, you can effectively install sod and create a beautiful, healthy lawn.
