Lippia Ground Cover

Lippia ground cover, also known as Phyla Nodiflora, Frog Fruit, and Turkey Tangle, is a Native ground cover. Lippia ground cover uses only half the amount of water compared to grass and never requires mowing. Forget about the hassle of keeping up with mowing sessions during your free time! With seasonal trimming and minimal vertical growth, Lippia ground cover hugs the ground, and its leaves grow sideways instead of upward. Lippia ground cover thrives in direct sun and is well-suited for hot climates. Lippia ground cover spreads out like bermudagrass and can repair itself if damaged. This ground cover has the highest drought tolerance and recovers remarkably well even after severe drought conditions, making it an excellent choice to replace traditional sod or grass.

Lippia ground cover, native plant lawn alternative!

Lippia ground cover is native to North and South America. Lippia ground cover thrives in warm weather and is ideal for direct sun and hot climates. However, Lippia ground cover is not suitable for snowy or heavily frosty areas. On the East Coast, Lippia Ground Cover is sometimes referred to as Turkey Tangler and has different varieties in Florida.

Lippia ground cover is particularly well-suited in North America due to its evergreen characteristics. Lippia ground cover typically stays close to the ground, reaching a maximum height of 3 inches before spreading horizontally. As it grows from plugs, its stems become thicker, keeping most leaves flat against the ground and creating an effective weed barrier requiring very little maintenance.

Lippia as a Pollinator

Starting in early May, Lippia ground cover starts producing small white, yellow, and purple flowers, which provide essential pollen for the local ecosystem. If you have concerns about bee allergies or prefer not to have these flowers, consider mowing every two weeks until the end of the flowering season. Once they've wilted, the flowers can be left on the lawn or mowed without issue. Remember that while it's unnecessary to mow if you want a healthy, full lawn, we recommend it as an option. If you choose to mow, start with the highest setting before making any trims.

Lippia Plugs

Lippia ground cover is currently offered in plug form with a 1-3 week advance order option. Our plugs are provided in standard trays, and it is advisable to plant them promptly. We take great care to ensure that our Lippia ground cover plugs are in optimal health and ready for planting. If you require different sizes of frog fruit or Lippia ground cover, please contact us directly at 1-800-381-8163.

Lippia Ground Cover Drought Tolerance

Native ground covers such as Lippia ground cover offer an excellent alternative for ground covering, demanding less water and maintenance compared to conventional sod lawns. In case of damage, they recover more quickly in hot weather than cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass.
